Carnesville, GA---Saturday night the Emmanuel College Lions defeated the Southern Wesleyan Warriors 1-0 in women's soccer action.  The win was the first EC Women's Soccer win over SWU since the series began in 2002.

The Lions held a 0-8-1 record versus SWU entering the match and had only scored 4 goals in all the defeats through the years.  EC had forced a 1-1 double OT tie in 2010 to come close to a result but it was fitting that a senior EC Lion would provide the decisive goal on her Senior Night game in 2011.

After a flurry of action inside the SWU penalty box senior midfielder Alexis Schultz (Dakar, Senegal) collected a loose clearance and drove home the game-winning goal in the 20th minute of the match.  Some strong defending by Lindsey Freese (Cumming, GA), Dali Sterling (Evans, GA), Jessica Cheek (Macon, GA), Katie Harrell (Mableton, GA), and senior captain Lindsay Taylor (Morehead City, NC) limited the SWU attack to 9 shots all night with Cyara Castillo (Springboro, OH) dealing with the four strikes on goal collecting four saves.

EC again looked to attack all game long and pounded out 28 shots forcing 8 SWU saves on the evening.

"It was a complete team defensive effort tonight," said Head Coach Forrest Wimberly.  "We had highlighted defending in training all week long and it was nice to see those tackles, recovery runs, and clearances transfer from training to the game.  It was special for Lex to get the big goal on her senior night...she didn't let anything keep her from this win tonight."

The four EC seniors honored were recognized at halftime in a ceremony highlighting their EC Soccer accomplishments.

Leah Meisch (Wichita, KS) has made 51 career appearances for the Lions scoring 5 goals adding 3 assists.

Lindsay Taylor (Morehead City, NC) has made 53 career appearances for the Lions scoring 6 goals adding 2 assists.

Stephanie Schultz (Dakar, Senegal) has made 70 career appearances for the Lions scoring 10 goals and adding 18 assists.  Her 3 assists VS Brewton Parker in '10 and 9 assists in the '09 season are both program records.

Alexis Schultz (Dakar, Senegal) has made 71 career appearances for the Lions scoring 25 goals and adding 18 assists.  Her 3 goals VS Point in '11 is a program record for goals in a game.  Alexis is a two-time NCCAA All-Region selection and was named the SSAC Offensive Player of the Week in Sept 2011....the first SSAC Offensive POTW honor in the history of EC soccer.  And the goal tonight over SWU was a huge career highlight as well.

The Lions play Tuesday at Brenau in the final game of the 2011 regular season.  Kickoff is set at 7 pm at Allen Creek Soccer Park.

EC has now tied several records in 2011.  Goals in a season (41 set in 2002), SSAC Conference wins in a season (3 set in 2010), and wins in row (5 set in 2010).  The Lions are now 8-9-0 on the season...just one win shy of the program-record 9 wins during the 2003 season.
