Central, SC---The Emmanuel College Lions played to a 1-1 double overtime tie versus the host Southern Wesleyan Warriors in NCCAA South Region playoff action.
In the penalty shootout that followed the tie the Lions were unable to advance in the tournament falling 3-1.
The 18 days in between the regular season finale and the playoffs found both teams sluggish in the first half. A Megan Ream (Lavonia, GA) goal in the 70th minute opened up the game 1-0 for the Lions. Just a minute later a scramble inside the EC penalty box led to a SWU penalty kick and the game-tying goal.
After full time the Lions attacked at will in the overtime outshooting SWU 5-0 in the two periods forcing three spectacular saves from the SWU goalkeeper. EC outshot SWU 16 to 14 on the day.
"Penalty kicks is just a part of the game of soccer we all agree to dislike," said Head Coach Forrest Wimberly. "Both teams played well on the day and the penalty kicks are the agreed way to see which team advances in the tournament. I am very proud of the energy, effort, and team work we put together on the field this weekend."
The Lions now hold a record of 8-10-1 in 2011.
