Emmanuel Baseball Falls on Road to Truett McConnell, 4-0

After starting the season 3-0, Emmanuel Baseball received their first loss on Wednesday to Truett McConnell University. Despite strong pitching efforts from junior Dalton Kuhn and sophomore Cody Waters, the Lions failed to get on the board in the contest, losing by a final score of 4-0.

How It Happened

Inning 1

The Lions would start the game by going down in order in the top of the first. Freshman Evan Bensch made his first career start for TMU, and after falling behind to Emmanuel's leadoff hitter 3-0, he battled back to strike out Tim Manning and proceeded to retire both Brock Baughcum and Stephen Skeggs to start the game.

In the bottom half of the inning, Emmanuel's starter Dalton Kuhn retired the first two batters before giving up a solo shot home run to DH Patrick Overstreet that would give TMU a 1-0 lead.

Inning 2

After a leadoff single by senior Eric Pape, the game started to look optimistic for the Lions in the top half of the second. Then after consecutive outs by Daniel Gooden and Jacob Teston, Hanon Price walked, leading to multiple base runners for the Lions. Freshman catcher Brandon Hill then smoked a ball into right field for a single, but the baserunner Eric Pape was thrown out at home on a fantastic throw by TMU's right fielder Andrew Fogarty.

The Bears of Truett McConnell would add another run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single by Calob Rowland.

Innings 3-4

After a scoreless third inning for both teams, the Lions once again were back in scoring position in the fourth. The inning started with a single by Stephen Skeggs. Bensch then picked off on a steal attempt by Skeggs, and TMU first baseman Chris Carden airmailed a throw into left field, allowing Skeggs to move to third with no outs in the inning. With four-hole hitter Eric Pape up to bat, the Lions had an opportunity to do some damage. Unfortunately, Pape went down on strikes for the first time this season. Daniel Gooden then flied out to shallow right, not deep enough for Skeggs to try and tag from third base. Then after a walk by Jacob Teston, Skeggs was thrown out at home on a passed ball by the catcher that took a friendly bounce right back to him.

After an error by Tim Manning and two hits by the Bears, the Lions surrendered two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 4-0 ballgame.

Innings 5-9

Neither team would score the rest of the game, and the Lions would be held without a hit in the final five innings. The Lions were close to scoring in the ninth when they lead the inning off with a well hit ball down the left field line by Tim Manning that looked as if it was destined to breakup the Bears shutout. However, the Bears left fielder, David Dasher, went up and robbed the home run, allowing the Bears to hold on to their shutout.

Notables

Stephen Skeggs and Eric Pape both extended their hit streak to four games on the season.
