The Emmanuel Baseball team played host to the Shorter Hawks on Tuesday. Shorter, who came into the contest with an 8-5 record, was able to pull away late in the game despite a solid offensive effort from Emmanuel.
How It Happened
The Lions were able to jump out to an early lead after towering home runs on back to back pitches by three and four hitters Stephen Skeggs and Eric Pape. Shorter was able to get one back in the top of the third however after the first three batters for the Hawks reached base. The Lions were able to do damage control in the inning after Lions catcher Philip Swindell picked off the runner at third base for the last out of the inning. The Lions quickly answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third, once again due to hits by Skeggs and Pape.
The Hawks were able to tie the game up 3-3 in the top of the fourth. The inning started with the Shorter leadoff reaching on an error after a hard hit ground ball to Brock Baughcum that would get past him. He would then score on the next batter on a single by Vasquez. Vasquez would also score later in the inning on a single by Gerstner. The Hawks would also add two more in the top of the fifth after a two run blast by Leech, giving them a 5-3 lead.
Then after being held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, the Lions struck big in the sixth by scoring three runs thanks to a single by Jacob Teston and then a two run homerun to left center field by Philip Swindell. After six, the Lions held a 6-5 lead.
The lead would change once again in the top of the seventh after the Hawks added four more to the scoreboard. All runs were scored on home run efforts by Cherry and Vasquez. Emmanuel was able to add one more in the bottom of the eighth but after the Hawks added four more in the top of the ninth, the deficit became too large and the Hawks held on to win by a score of 13-7.
Stephen Skeggs went 3-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored
Eric Pape went 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored
Hanon Price went 3-4 with a run scored
