The Lions put on a hitting display Friday night, gathering 17 hits in the contest. Eight of the nine starting hitters for Emmanuel had hits in the contest and all nine scored at least one run. Sophomore Bryson Cornett received the win for the Lions, throwing five innings in the contest.
How It Happened
The Tornadoes struck first in the ballgame by scratching across a run in the top of the first off of a two out RBI single by Dylan Sligh, and then proceeded to hold the Lions scoreless in the first inning. But after King pushed across another run in the second, Emmanuel would strike big in the bottom half of the second, producing four runs on four hits. All four hits for the Lions were singles. Hanon Price, Dallas Richards, Stephen Skeggs, and Brock Baughcum were responsible for the hits in the inning.
Then, after the Lions held the Tornadoes scoreless in the third, they would once again strike big by producing four more runs to the tune of three hits, including a double by Stephen Skeggs.
King University was able to get a couple runs back in the top of the fourth after back to back doubles to start the inning by Cook and Ruiz. However, the Lions continued pouring on runs in the bottom fourth. After Hanon Price walked and stole second, Jacob Teston hit an RBI double down the leftfield line to score Price from second. Teston would score later in the inning after a single to right field by Philip Swindell.
The Lions put the game all but out of reach after the fifth; Emmanuel's hottest hitters, Stephen Skeggs and Eric Pape once again came through with doubles in the inning. Swindell came up with yet another oppo single in the inning, and Freshman Brandon Hill joined the hit parade with a single to left. Meanwhile, Daniel Gooden appeared to be excellent in his first inning of relief.
In the sixth, Skeggs added his fourth hit of the day and would later score on a passed ball.
In the seventh, Daniel Gooden continued to dominate King's hitters with a heavy fastball that had a lot of life. After holding the Tornadoes scoreless in the seventh, the Lions added three more with a pinch hit single by Josh Viveros and Stephen Skeggs' fifth hit of the game.
The Lions failed to score in the eighth. Ty Tipton pitched the eighth and the ninth inning for the Lions.
Stephen Skeggs went 5-6 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.
Hanon Price went 2-4 with 3 runs scored.
Daniel Gooden threw two scoreless innings and struck out five.
To close out the series, Emmanuel Baseball will play King University in a double header on Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
