Franklin Springs, GA---Cheerleading is back at Emmanuel College for the 2011-12 school year. Thirteen ladies under the direction of Coach Gloria Bona have put in some hard work to be ready to bring some noise at EC basketball games this winter.
"Very few of the girls have basketball cheer experience," said Coach Gloria Bona at a recent practice. Most of the squad cheered for football in high school and "No, you don't hit them" has been a theme for the new basketball cheers during the preseason practices.
"The girls have been fantastic in practice and have worked so hard together," continued Bona. "This has been a learning year for them and me...it's been 25 years since I've worked with cheerleading."
Bona was a cheerleader at EC and later coached Cheerleading at EC off and on for 10 years starting in 1975 before putting the pom poms down to focus on family (two sons), a career (in the Franklin County school system), and supporting her husband (EC Athletic Director Mike Bona and his basketball teams).
Team captain Amber Kennison is the only team member with college cheerleading experience from her previous cheerleading at Truett-McConnell College. Sharon Simon is co-captain and along with the rest of the squad will look to add to the EC spirit on campus this winter.
Additional team members are: Cyara Castillo, Megan Ream, Jodi Layton, Rachel Fenters, Katlyn Moncrief, Rachel Baker, Ansley Teasley, Hannah Bentley, Porsha Nevada, Brianna Reed, andSamantha Fulbright.
The Cheerleaders will be present at all home varsity men's and women's basketball games this season.
