Belmont, N.C.- The Emmanuel Men's Basketball Team pulled out a close win against Belmont Abbey with a final score of 70-68. The top scorers tonight were Ronnie Stanley scoring 18 points and Zach Vess scoring 10 points. Ronnie Stanley always grabbed the most rebounds, followed by Zach Lillie and Kurtis Robinson.
The first half started off with Zach Lillie scoring the first two points for the Lions. Ronnie Stanley followed with his first 3-pointer of the game. The Lions were now up 5-2, when Zach Vess made a layup to expand that lead. Belmont came back and was only trailing by one point when Zach Lillie charged down the court and swooshed his first dunk of the game. Emerson McClung was first of the Lions to get fouled and made both of his free throws. Belmont tied the game up 11-11, but Ronnie Stanley did not let it stay tied when he made his second 3-pointer of the game. Zach Lillie grabbed an offensive rebound from a missed shot by Ronnie Stanley and passed it to Colton Collins who put up two points to tie the game 16-16. Austin Greene was fouled and made both of his free throws, followed by two layups. The Lions fouled Belmont which allowed them to take over the lead. Nick Scheimann put up a layup to win back the lead by one point. Zach Lillie followed by putting up two points on the board. Kurtis Robinson put up three points including a free throw. The Lions racked up a pretty nice lead when Trevor Jain and Austin Greene scored their first 3-pointers of the game. This would end the first half of the game with a score of 37-34.
Emerson McClung started out the second half with his first 3-pointer of the game. He was followed by Colton Collins who also scored his first 3-pointer. Emerson McClung added two more points to the board and was followed by Zach Lillie who put up four points. The Lions were only up by one point when Kurtis Robinson made a free throw. Zach Vess extended the lead to four points with a layup. Kurtis Robinson and Emerson McClung followed adding four points to the game. The Lions lost the lead to Belmont after a couple of free throws. Ronnie Stanley brought the Lions up to only trailing by one point with a layup, but Belmont scoring again. Ronnie Stanley then came through to tie the game up with his third 3-pointer of the game. Ronnie Stanley did not leave the game tied when he came right back and scored his fourth 3-pointer of the game. Ronnie Stanley added two more points with a layup and then was fouled. Ronnie Stanley made both of his free throws which brought the score up to 70-65. Belmont came back to score one more time, but it was not enough to defeat the Lions.
The Emmanuel Men's Basketball team now holds an overall record of 9-4, with a conference record of 4-1. The Lions will be back home on Friday Jan. 6th to play against North Greenville. That game will begin at 7:30 P.M.
