Lions Kick Off Fall Season at the Palmetto Tennis Championship

Sumter, SC - The Emmanuel College Men's Tennis Team traveled to Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina for their first event of the season. The tournament kicked off with a round of doubles with the duo Canadas/Pereira facing Moreno/Stanec from Limestone College. The slow start from the Lions team led to the unfortunate loss of the match, (8-3). At the same time on a different court, Alcacer/Romero played Bhriguvanshi/Edgar from Erskine College. The Lions were ahead in the match, fighting hard and finally reaching match point at (7-5). The Flying Fleet not only saved the match, but also managed to grab the win with a tight tie-breaker. Davis/White played Waters/Nguyen from Belmont Abbey College and ended with a tough loss of (8-3). Adams/Wright competed against Bezy/Cole, also from Belmont Abbey College. Feeling a bit nervous in their first collegiate match, Adams/Wright dropped the match (8-1).

After the round of doubles, the Lions stepped back on the court for a round of singles play. The sophomore, Jorge Canadas, faces Rafa Gonçalves from Chowan. After winning the first set (6-4), Canadas saw his opponent become more aggressive with fast approaches to the net and take the match to a deciding super tie-breaker. Even after a tough fight, the Hawk served better to close the match (4-6), (6-2), (10-7). At the same time, the sophomore, Juan Carlos Romero, played Yannis Moulod from North Greenville University. After cruising in the first set, Romero reached match point on serve at (5-4), but his opponent was able to save all three chances from the Lion, forcing a tie-breaker in the second set. Juan Carlos proved to be stronger mentally and won the tie-breaker and the match (6-1), (7-6 [7-3]). The freshman Tom Jarry had his debut in college tennis against Jack Middleton from Mount Olive. Tom was able to have a good start opening the first set (3-0). Middleton began to find his best tennis from the baseline, especially on the forehand side, taking the first set to a tense tie-breaker, where he came out on top (7-6 [8-6]). The Lion did not give up and after cutting down on unforced errors, he was able to capture the second set with a quick (6-1). The match was then decided in a super tie-breaker won by the Trojan (10-8). Lucas Pereira, the senior, proved to be too consistent on his serves and returns throughout the match to capture a quick (6-2), (6-2). On the other hand, the junior, Enrique Alcacer, had to battle for three sets against Enrique Moreno from Limestone College. The Lion was able to defeat the Saint by (6-1), (3-6), (10-5).
