Tennis Competes At ITA Southeast Regional Championship

SUMTER, Sc. - The Emmanuel College men and women's tennis teams competed at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship hosted at the Palmetto Tennis Center. In the large pool of 128 individual competitors and 64 doubles competitors, a few Lion tennis players stood out.

For the men:

On the doubles side, Senior Enrique Alcacer and Junior Juan Carlos Romero defeated a duo of Mount Olive players in the first round, 7-6. Alcacer and Romero then went on to defeat Erskine College in the round of 32, 6-3. The men made it all the way to the round of 16 before falling to Lander University 6-2.

On the singles side, Thembo Makhanya defeated Charlie Hutchings from FMU 7-5; 4-6; 7-6 to advance to the round of 64. Makhanya then fell to Christopher Wejs from Belmont Abbey College 6-1; 7-6.

On the back draw, Freshman Kornel Kimagweski got a win.

For the women:

On the singles side, Senior Chloe O'Connor defeated Marillyn Roustand from King 6-0; 6-2, before falling to Chyi Lee of Wingate. Senior Pearllan Cipriano also advanced to the round of 64 by defeating Alisa Liashova of CNU 4-6; 7-5; 7-5. Senior Fantine Botella was the last on the singles side to advance to the round of 64 by defeating Faith Wright of Erskine 7-6; 7-6.

On the back draw, Junior Maria Raich Solans got a win.

This tournament allowed the teams an opportunity to compete against top regional competitors as they prepare for their spring season.

Next up for Emmanuel is Anderson University on Thursday, October 4th at home.
