Men's Volleyball Edges Out Alderson Broaddus in Five.

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball team won another game at home on Saturday against Alderson Broaddus University. After a back and forth battle, the Lions won in five sets to take the match 25-23, 17-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-13.

The first set saw an early run from the Lions after a couple service aces from Manuel Melenciano. The Lions pushed through and remained in the lead for the duration of the set. They were challenged in the final stretch after several kills from the Battlers, but closed out the set 25-23.

In the second set the Lions struggled to stay positive at the net. With a hitting percentage of -.074 combined with several ball handling errors, Emmanuel gave up set #2 17-25.

In the Third set Emmanuel appeared to come out with a fresh new offense. Their best set of the night allowed them an impressive .600 at the net as they powered through the Battlers. Ackeem West and Don Thompson added several blocks to the stat sheet.

The fourth set was a must win for the Battlers. While the Lions headed in off of an impressive set, they couldn't carry the momentum with them. Emmanuel had three errors early in the set that proved to be detrimental. The Lions continued to have a more dominant offense, but their aggressive serves cost them too many errors. The Battlers took the fourth set 25-22.

In the fifth and final set things were looking good for Alderson Broaddus. The Battlers got the first point of the set due to an attack error from the Lions. While both teams continued to exchange points, Alderson Broaddus remained in the lead. At 5-4, another attack error from Emmanuel gave the Battlers a two point lead. Finally, the Lions tied up the score at 10-10 due to more errors from Alderson Broaddus. Emmanuel finally took the lead, then went on to edge out their opponent with a kill from Manuel Melenciano to take the final set 15-13.

The Lions will continue action on Thursday, Feb. 22nd when they take on Erskine College at home. This match will be dedicated to children living with cancer as the men host a Go Gold Night for the American Childhood Cancer Organization. All proceeds at the gate will go directly to the organization.
