Men's Volleyball Drops Two Conference Matches Over Weekend

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Emmanuel College men's volleyball team travelled to North Carolina this weekend to take on conference opponents Barton College and the University of Mount Olive. The Lions fell to Barton 0-3 on Friday night before facing another three set loss to Mount Olive on Saturday.

The Lions found themselves down against the Bulldogs in the first set. Emmanuel would reach with a three point run, their largest of the set, but were unable to catch up. Barton took the first set 25-22.

The Lions came out swinging in the second set, putting down three straight kills from Juniors Don Thompson and Aleksa Lakic. Emmanuel continued to challenge the Bulldogs by creating their largest lead of the night at 13-8. Finally, Barton struck back with several kills and aces, putting down 10 points to the Lions 3 and taking the lead 18-15. Another run from the Bulldogs allowed them to close out the set 25-19.

Despite the Lions facing a deficit nearly the entire third set, they had their strongest performance of the night, hitting .323% and racking up 14 kills. Emmanuel found themselves trailing 24-21 before a much needed three point run prevented Barton from finishing the match. Another kill from Barton's Mandilaris put them at advantage point again before a service error tied up the set once again. Barton would take the lead with another kill this time from Montaruli. Junior Alejandro Robles retaliated with his seventh kill of the night to keep the Lions alive. Finally, an attack error from the Lions followed by a final kill from the Bulldogs gave Barton the third set 28-26.

Vs. Mount Olive

Despite only trailing their opponent by 2 kills, the Lions struggled with several errors. Emmanuel accumulated 22 attack errors and 13 service errors making it difficult to keep pace with the Trojans. These mistakes in addition to Mount Olive's 20 total blocks allowed the Trojans a smooth ride to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 victory.

These losses bring the Lions record to 3-4 overall, 0-3 conference.

Next up, the Lions will return home for a match against Life University on Tuesday, January 29th at 7:00pm.
