Central, SC – On March 9, 2017, the Lady Lions traveled to Southern Wesleyan University to take on the Lady Warriors in a double- header competition. In the first game, the Lady Warriors came out strong when Sara Sweatt scored off of a SAC bunt in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Warriors extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Sara Sweatt singled to center field. The single advanced Becca White to second, Tiffany Cathey to third, and Lexi Thompson scored bringing the warriors lead to 2-0. The Lady Lions rallied back in the top of the fifth when Crystal Busbee singled and scored Noelle Petty from third making the score 2-1. The Lady Lions rally continued in the top of the seventh inning when Halle Cheek hit a sacrifice fly that scored Alexis Costlow from third. Crystal Busbee then tripled scoring Noelle Petty. Mary Baxter approached the plate and doubled into left center, scoring Crystal Busbee. Becky Collins continued the scoring onslaught when she singled, driving in Mary Baxter. Then for insurance, Briana Morgan doubled into centerfield scoring Collins and bringing the Lady Lions lead to 6-2, capping off the 5 run inning. Southern Wesleyan was unable to answer back in the bottom of the 7th as Alannah Long shut the door on the Warriors. After relieving Taylor Saxon in the 4th, Alannah Long earned her first win of the season after pitching 3.2 innings and only yielding 4 hits and 2 BB.
In the second game of the double header your Lady Lions picked right back up where they left off as Becky Collins drove in Crystal Busbee to make the score 1-0 in the top of the first inning. In the top of the second your Lady Lions added another run as freshman, Kristin Durden singled in fellow freshman Noelle Petty. In the bottom of the third the Warriors brought the game within 1 run as Lizzie Fela singled driving in Becca White. Then in the bottom of the 4th inning the Warriors tied the game as, Becca White drew a bases loaded walk scoring Amber Belk bringing the score to 2-2. Then in the top of the 5th with Crystal Busbee at third base, the Warriors allowed a passed ball and without hesitation Busbee took home putting your Lady Lions up 3-2. During the top of the 6th inning your Lady Lions added two insurance runs as Kristin Durden singled in Alannah Long. Then after Kristin Durden advanced on a throwing error, senior Halle Cheek tripled into left center driving in Durden making the score 5-2. Again, another strong relief appearance from the Lady Lions pitching staff shut the door on the Warriors. This time from sophomore, Madison Hopper as she pitched 3.1 innings and giving up only 3 hits with no walks and 1 strike out to earn her 1st win of the season.
The Lady Lions will be back in action to take on King Univeristy at home on March 18th, 2017.
