Winona Lake, IN – The Lady Lions basketball team had high hopes of winning a national championship, but fell short during their first game against the University of Northwestern.
Last years opening round saw the same two teams competing with Emmanuel coming out on top, this year the Eagles prevailed. The game started well for the Lions, outscoring the Eagles in the first quarter by three. Northwestern began to find their groove in the second quarter, taking the lead at 34-29.
After half time, both teams continued to battle it out, with a three-pointer from Timia Reynolds once again giving the Lions a lead with 5 minutes left in the game. The Lions would continue to hold the lead until 1 minute left where multiple forced free throws allowed the Eagles to claim the victory 61-57.
UNW shot 35.7 percent from the floor, while holding EC to 32.2 shooting. The Lions were led by Mikayla Trombley with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
The Lady Lions will now play Bethesda University @ 8:30 AM on Thursday.
