Franklin Springs, G.A- The Emmanuel Women's Basketball Team took on the North Greenville Crusaders and pulled out a victory in overtime with a final score of 70-74. The top scorers of today's game were Timia Reynolds, Elise Coberly, and Mikayla Trombley. The top rebounders today were Elise Coberly, Lochlain Corliss, and Timia Reynolds.
The first quarter started out with the Lady Crusaders getting the tip off, but Mikayla Trombley was the first Lady Lion to put points up on the board. Following her in scoring was Elise Coberly who stole the lead from the Crusaders bringing the score to 5-6. Timia Reynolds increased that lead when she gained a defensive rebound and charged down the court to make a layup, with an assist by Avery Scarbrough. Neither team had scored in a few minutes when Timia Reynolds broke the silence and made a layup, then came right back with a jump shot from a rebound by Lochlain Corliss. Lochlain Corliss came through with another defensive rebound, but no shot was made. The Lions were up 5-14 when Mikayla Trombley swooshed her first 3-pointer of the game increasing the Ladies lead by 5-17. Just one minute later, Timia Reynolds put in her first 3-pointer of the game. Genesis Jones would bring the first quarter to a close with her jump shot. The Lions were up 11-22 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter started out with Timia Reynolds recovering a defensive rebound and charging down the court to make a layup scoring the first points of the quarter for the Lady Lions. Lochlain Corliss stole the ball from the Lady Crusaders and was fouled. Lochlain Corliss added two points to the board with her free throws. The Lady Lions were up 13-27 and stayed there for a few minutes. Elise Coberly was the next to get fouled and put up two points from her free throws. Ajah Taylor made a layup with an assist by Timia Reynolds and then Mikayla Trombley was fouled. She put up one point from her two free throws. Elise Coberly was fouled again and made one of her free throws to add a point to the board. The Lady Lions were now up 27-33 with the Crusaders slowly closing in. Timia Reynolds was fouled again and added two points to the board, which would close out the first half of the game. The Lady Lions were up six points, 29-35.
Timia Reynolds started out the third quarter strong by making her layup, with an assist by Mikayla Trombley. Mikayla Trombley followed after with her second 3-pointer of the game and then followed with a layup, making the score 34-47. Defensive was well played by both teams causing minimal scoring on both sides. Mikayla Trombley was fouled and made both of her free throws. Elise Coberly came through to end the third quarter with her first 3-pointer of the game. The Lady Lions ended the third quarter up 41-52.
The fourth quarter started out the same way the last one ended, with Elise Coberly making her second 3-pointer of the game. The Lady Crusaders made a comeback and were only two points down. The Lady Crusaders then came back and tied the game 55-55. The Lady Lions were hoping to regain the lead, but it fell into the hands of the Lady Crusaders. Avery Scarbrough was fouled and the first Lady Lion to add points to the board so far in the fourth quarter. Lochlain Corliss grabbed a defensive rebound allowing Elise Coberly to add two points to the board with her jump shot. The Lady Lions were now down 61-58. Elise Coberly was fouled and made both of her free throws, leaving the Lady Lions trailing by one point. Lochlain Corliss gained another defensive rebound passing to Avery Scarbrough who made a jump shot. The Lady Crusaders scored two points leaving the Lady Lions trailing by three points with :44 left in the game. Lochlain Corliss broke away and made her first 3-pointer of the game to tie the game and end the fourth quarter.
Overtime started with five minutes on the clock. Timia Reynolds was fouled and added the first point for the Lady Lions during overtime. Lochlain Corliss was fouled next and made both of her free throws to bring the Ladies into the lead. Elise Coberly made a jump shot and a free throw to add three points to the board. Lochlain Corliss made two more free throws, which brought the Lady Lions up six points, 67-73. The Lady Crusaders made a 3-pointer, but still needed more than to win the game. Mikayla Trombley ended overtime with her last free throw. The Lady Lions pulled out the win with a score of 70-74.
The Lady Lions now hold an overall record of 5-5, with a conference record of 4-3. They will play at home on Monday Jan. 9th against Converse College for another conference win. The game will begin at 5:30 P.M.
