Women's Lacrosse Rank 6th in Conference Carolinas Preseason Poll

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The 2019 Conference Carolinas Women's Lacrosse preseason poll has been released. Limestone College will enter the season as the favorite to win the Conference Carolinas Women's Lacrosse Championship, according to Conference Carolinas coaches.


1.
 Limestone College: The Saints received 100 points from Conference coaches, all from 10 first-place votes.

Limestone swept both the Conference Carolinas regular season and tournament titles after going 17-3 overall in 2018 and 9-0 in league play. The Saints great play earned them a bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Lacrosse Championship, which was their first postseason trip since the 2014 season.

The Saints return a load of talent, including four all-conference selections in Rose BlackburnCourtney LaflerBritannie Ouimet and Alyssa Voccia, which makes them a clear favorite in 2019.

2. University of Mount Olive: The Trojans nabbed 89 points and one first-place vote from Conference coaches. Mount Olive went 14-5 overall and 9-1 in league play last season.

The Trojans have five All-Conference Carolinas selections back in 2019 with the group headlined by the reigning Defensive Player of the Year Sadie Michaeland reigning Freshman of the Year Jordan ShughrueKarlie AbbottKiara Burke and Jackie Kaderabek round out the rest of the all-conference returners for UMO.

Mount Olive's talent and experience makes it the biggest contender to knock off Limestone in 2019.

3. Belmont Abbey College: The Crusaders of Belmont Abbey enter this season ranked third with 84 points from Conference coaches. Belmont Abbey went 8-2 in Conference Carolinas play and 14-6 overall in 2018.

Belmont Abbey returns one All-Conference Carolinas pick in Marin Felsoci, who should be the team's top offensive threat.

Players to Watch:

  • Annie Brannon (Sr.) - Goalkeeper
  • Kylie Eastman (So.) - Attack
  • *Marin Felsoci (Jr.) - Midfield

 

4. North Greenville University: The Crusaders of North Greenville are ranked fourth with 73 points from Conference coaches. North Greenville finished last season 7-3 in league play and 13-6 overall.

A trio of all-conference selections return for the Crusaders in Hanna HawkinsRachel Kellogg and Sydney Taylor. Kellogg is one of the best player in the league and could be a dark horse for Offensive Player of the Year in 2019.

5.  Chowan University: The Hawks tallied 59 points and are fifth-place to open 2019. Chowan finished last season by going 8-9 overall and 6-4 in Conference Carolinas play.

The Hawks have the luxury of returning one of the league's best defenders in all-conference pick Tahvae Burton.

Players to Watch:

  • Jasmine Latney (Sr.) - Attack
  • Jordan Nicholson (So.) - Defense

 

6. Emmanuel College: The Lions debut in the preseason poll in sixth-place after collecting 52 points from Conference coaches. Emmanuel went 7-9 overall in 2018 while posting a 4-5 conference mark.

Players to Watch:

  • Tiana Machado (Sr.) - Goalkeeper
  • Shannon Sapp (Jr.) - Defense
  • Megan Shortt (Sr.) - Attack

 

7. Converse College: The Valkyries collected 48 points from Conference coaches and ranked seventh. Converse ended last season 6-12 overall with a 4-6 Conference Carolinas mark.

Players to Watch:

  • Victoria Bailey (Sr.) - Defense
  • Kat Goldfuss (Sr.) - Attack
  • Flore Samsi (So.) - Midfield

 

t8. Lees-McRae College: The Bobcats earned 31 points from Conference coaches and enter the season tied for eighth with Barton. Lees-McRae finished 1-11 overall and 1-9 in league play a season ago.

Players to Watch:

  • Kalbie Grassett (Fr.) - Midfield
  • Beth Haynes (Jr.) - Midfield
  • Kat Reeves (Sr.) - Defense

 

t8. Barton College: The Bulldogs earned 31 points from Conference coaches and enter the season tied for eighth with Lees-McRae. Barton went 5-10 overall in 2018, which included a 3-6 league record.

The Bulldogs have the luxury of returning one of the league's best defenders in all-conference pick Rebecca Fraser.

Players to Watch:

10. Erskine College: The Fleet notched 26 points from Conference coaches to enter the year ranked 10th. Erskine went 2-11 overall and 2-8 in Conference play last season.

  • Maxi Riese (Jr.) - Defense
  • Brittany Smith (So.) - Midfield

 

11. Southern Wesleyan University: The Warriors close out the poll in 11th with 12 points from Conference coaches. Southern Wesleyan posted an 0-13 overall record and 0-9 league mark in 2018.

Players to Watch:

  • Kaeleigh McDaniel (So.) - Goalkeeper
  • Jairy Sandoval (So.) - Defense
  • Latia Santos (Fr.) - Midfield
