Bristol, TN – The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team traveled to King University this Sunday for another Conference Carolina's Dual Match.
The doubles event started with Botella/Cipriano playing better than before and with a combination of massive forehands from the baseline by Fantine and good volleys by Pearllan, the lions eared a solid win over Salazar/Hull by 8-5. On courts #2 and #3 the story was much different for the visitors. Struggling to make forehands and going for the wrong shots now and then, the Lions could not handle the experience from the Tornado and dropped both matches by 8-2.
With 2-1 down after doubles, the Lady Lions were looking to get ahead by winning the first 3 singles matches. Pearllan Cipriano kept the high energy after winning the doubles and dispatched Hull by 7-5 6-1. Cipriano dropped a 5-2 lead after her opponent started coming in to the net a lot but with a fast change of strategy and sharp passes she found a better rhythm and gave the Lions a tie overall. On the next court, Chloe O'Connor made a lot of unusual mistakes and dropped the match by a double 6-4. The very next court, Claudia Morris battled an old teammate and tried to tie the event for the Lions. Haley Maloney was not looking to make things easier and clearly exploring Morris weak spots, close the first set 6-1 and opened a double break lead in the second. Morris came back and tied everything again, but could not hold the serve and dropped the match by 6-1 7-5. It was up to the freshman Fantine Botella to keep the hopes alive. And she did not disappoint her team with a quick 6-3 6-2 win over Nia Giliam. With 2 courts left to be played and the score in favor of the home team, the Lions were in a tough spot. The freshman from Elberton, GA, Kaylee Kirby fought hard but she faced a solid opponent across the net and dropped the match 6-1 6-1. With the matched now clinched in favor of the Lions, EC still earned a well deserved win by the hands of the German Katharina Kiderlen in a hard fought match by 4-6 6-4 10-5. Even after another 5-4 loss, Head Coach Darbar commented, "a 5-4 loss is never easy and we have been there so many times this year now. We are still very young with only one upperclassman in the starting lineup, so we need to accept and learn from losses like today. Tomorrow is another day and we will be looking to perform better than today. The girls are learning and getting better every single day too, so the wins are on the way for sure!"
Emmanuel will be back in action tomorrow in another conference match against Lees McRae. First serve set to 2PM!
