Sumter, SC - The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team traveled to Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina for their first event of the season. The tournament kicked off with a round of doubles with the duo Botella/O'Connor against Capellades/Alvarez from Barton College. The Lions team only dropped one game in route to their first win of the season (8-1). At the same time, Cipriano/Silva defeated Berghaus/Loudermilk from Erskine College with solid serves and ground strokes for a final score of (8-4).
In singles play, the Lady Lions dominated the courts without losing a single match. Victoria Silva managed an impressive win in three sets against Jennifer Ball from Southern Wesleyan (1-6), (6-3), (10-6). Pearllan Cipriano grabbed a solid win against Morgan Nguyen from Belmont Abbey. Cipriano won the match with strategic play including drop shots and lobs with a final score of (6-1), (6-1). Maria Raich, the sophomore, faced Lenka Styblova from Chowan. Raich dominated the match with powerful well-places forehands from the baseline for a convincing win (6-3), (6-1). Lastly, the junior, Fantine Botella, had to fight for three sets after dropping the first in a tie-breaker. After a series of unforced errors by her opponent, Botella was able to win the second set and eventually the match (6-7 [7-0]), (6-3), (10-4).
The Lady Lions are back in actions this Saturday at 8AM.
