Sumter, SC – The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team advanced to the final rounds of the Palmetto Tennis Championships this Sunday.
The last day of the tournament kicked off with final doubles' match between two EC teams. Both Botella/O'Connor and Cipriano/Silva won all their matches, paving their way to the final. In a match full of possibilities and options, Botella and O'Connor made use of an early break to clinch a tight 8-6 win over their teammates.
After winning the doubles tournament, the Junior, Fantine Botella had to get back on the court for her Semi-final round against her teammate, Pearllan Cipriano. Botella ended up victorious due to Cipriano's injury. Later, Fantine would take the courts one more time to face Katie Loudermilk, from Erskine College. The Lady Lion was the #1 seeded player for the tournament and she did show why she was quoted the favorite to win the tournament. Dropping very few points when playing with the first serve, Botella quickly grabbed a 6-0 win in the first set. The Flying Fleet player became more solid in the second set but it was not enough to complicate things to Fantine who used several inside out forehands, especially in tight situations, to secure a solid 6-0 6-3 win.
The Junior Chloe O'Connor was also scheduled to play her semifinal round after winning the doubles tournament. The Lady Lion had to face Alexandra Dolfi, from Limestone for a spot in the final. Without any hesitation in being aggressive, O'Connor was able to consolidate several winners from the baseline to snag a fast 6-1 win in the first set. The Saint did fight back and pushed Chloe to a much closer set, but not enough to overcome the EC player, who finished the set, and the match, 6-1 7-5. After a short break, Chloe was back again on the court for her last match of the tournament, facing Chowan's Roxana Daneshjoo. In a match full of unforced errors from both sides, O'Connor was able to perform better at the crucial moments to defeat her foe and win the tournament by a close 6-4 6-3 score.
With the wins, the Lady Lions Tennis team won all the draws they participated in.
EC Women's Tennis will not have a long rest since they will be back in action this Wednesday when they will serve as host to #40 Tusculum College Pioneers. First Serve is scheduled for 2PM!
