HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team split two games on Saturday with a 3-1 loss against the University of Indianapolis and a 3-0 win against Catawba College.
Continuing competition at the Coker/FMA 2018 Fall Invitational, the early morning match featured Emmanuel College against the University of Indianapolis. While the Lions hoped to continue their stellar performance into the second day of tournament play, they couldn't outperform the Greyhounds.
Senior Julie de Blanck continued running the court for the Lions with a .312 hitting percentage while Junior Aysha Avery tallied 20 digs. Despite their impressive numbers, Indianapolis surpassed them offensively and edged the Lions out in 3 of the 4 sets. Emmanuel managed to take the 3rd set with a score of 25-21 before being finished off in set 4.
For their final match of the tournament, the Lions made quick work of Catawba College with a 25-20, 25-13, 26-24 victory.
Sophomore Jenna Woodruff started things off with her first of ten kills for the match. Midway through the first set, Freshman Mia Cotton would deliver back to back kills starting a 4 point run for the Lions. Emmanuel would go on to close out the first set 25-20 and cruise through the second set 25-13.
The third and final set didn't come as easy for the Lions. A service error from Emmanuel put the Indians in position to close out set 3 with a score of 24-21. In a do or die situation, Junior Jessica Gray had a kill that sparked a little hope for the Lions. Catawba responded with an attack attempt from the right side that resulted in an error, forcing Catawba to call a timeout. When the Lions returned to the court, Julie de Blanck responded with a kill, followed by a service ace from Aysha Avery. The Lions would finish off the Indians with another kill from Jessica Gray.
The women's volleyball team will continue action next Friday in a crossover tournament with a game against Mars Hill at 2:00pm.
