VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Emmanuel College men's basketball team defeated #5 Valdosta State University on Sunday night, 77-73.
Prior to their matchup, the Blazers were ranked 4th nationally in scoring offense at 95.1 points per game, while ranking seventh nationally in scoring margin (18.3).
After a close fought battle, including 9 lead changes, the Lions rallied with 8 points for a comeback win over Valdosta State in the final minute. Emmanuel shot 42.9% from the field and totaled 50 rebounds while four players tallied double figures. Senior Kendrick Colvin led the Lions with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Austin Greene followed behind with 17 points.
The Blazers started with a five point run to grab an early lead. Freshman Kyler Ingram answered with back to back layups while a successful free-throw shot from Colvin tied the game up. After a couple more lead changes, Greene would put in another layup to put the Lions on top. Emmanuel would hold the lead for the remainder of the first half and well into the second.
Darrell Jones of Valdosta State hit both free-throws before adding another layup to break the Lions lead with less than four minutes on the clock. A couple more lead shifts occured before the Blazers 70-69 lead went unanswered for nearly a minute. Finally, Sophomore Brandon Simpson took the lead back 71-70 with fifty seconds remaining. Greene would put up two more points, forcing the Blazers to foul in the final seconds. The Lions hit the shots they needed to to close out the game 77-73.
Next up, the Lions will travel to North Carolina on Wednesday, January 2nd to take on conference opponent Mount Olive.
