FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College Men's Volleyball Team added another conference win to their belt to bring their record to 5-8 overall, 3-4 conference.
On Thursday night the men took on Erskine College at home. Throughout the season the men's volleyball team has hosted special nights to bring recognition to worthy causes. This week, the men hosted a Go Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Night. Fans were encouraged to wear gold to show their support and the men used the night as an opportunity to share statistics about childhood cancer, as well as collect money that was then donated to the American Childhood Cancer Association.
The night started well for the Lions who were coming off a win against Alderson Broaddus University. Emmanuel had a dominant offense throughout the first set with 16 kills compared to Erskine's 7. A final attack error from Erskine gave Emmanuel set #1 25-18.
In the second set the Flying Fleet started off with two back to back kills, gaining momentum throughout the set. The Lions would go on a 4 point run with two kills coming from Don Thompson, adding to his 16 kills for the night. The teams stayed neck and neck throughout the set until the Flying Fleet had a 23-22 advantage in the final stretch. The Fleet would grab a kill to put them in position to win the set, then a service ace from the Erskine allowed them the 2nd set 25-22.
In the third set Emmanuel held the lead for the first half. Emmanuel would let the lead slip away briefly then go on one of their longest runs of the night to take the third set 25-22.
The fourth set was a must win for Erskine who was now down two sets to one. The Flying Fleet played through with more kills and less mistakes than the Lions and found themselves on top at 23-21. Just a couple points shy of continuing the match, Erskine had two consecutive errors that forced their coach to call a timeout. When stepping back on the court, the Fleet had another error, allowing Emmanuel match point. #1 Aleksa Lakic ended the match with an ace, defeating Erskine 25-23.
The Lions will head to Limestone next Wednesday for their second meetup this season. Emmanuel defeated the Saints in five sets at their previous match.
