FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College women's basketball team defeated conference opponent Lees-McRae, 65-62, on Saturday afternoon in Banner Elk, North Carolina.
Emmanuel grabbed an early lead in the first quarter when a trio of Lions put up seven straight points. The Bobcats responded with nine straight points of their own to take the lead. Emmanuel would add another four points before Lees-McRae would close out the quarter with a 13-11 lead.
Emmanuel went on to tie the game in the opening two minutes of the second quarter. The Lions would retain control for the remainder of the half, though the Bobcats would reduce their deficit down to just one point, 27-26.
In the third quarter, Emmanuel began to break away with strong performances from Senior Lochlain Corliss and Sophomore Breanna Locke. Locke would hit a three-pointer with 1:59 left on the clock to give the Lions their largest lead of the night. Emmanuel continued into the fourth quarter leading 55-45.
Lees-McRae had a strong showing in the fourth quarter, putting up 13 points to Emmanuel's 3, tying the game at 58-58 with under three minutes remaining. The Lions responded with a successful layup and critical three-pointer from Sophomore Brooke Whitaker to take back the lead and give them a buffer. The Bobcats stuck back with four straight points to put them within one point before a final bucket from Corliss secured the game for the Lions, 65-62.
Both Corliss and Locke led the Lions with 15 points each. Junior Ajah Taylor tallied 8 rebounds.
The Lions will continue action at home on Wednesday, January 16th with a game against conference opponent Southern Wesleyan at 5:30pm.
