Lady Lions Lacrosse Falls to Montevallo University in First Home Game

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Emmanuel College Women's Lacrosse team opened their season with a home game against the University of Montevallo on Feb. 10.

The first half was a close one between Emmanuel and Montevallo with the Lady Lions trailing by one point at the end. The second half brought Montevallo out on top with a final score of 18-14.

Emmanuel's Tara Larson took the first draw control and ground ball pickup of the game. The Lady Lions also made two free position attempts before Montevallo's Jami Hudak made the first goal of the game with 28:34 remaining.

After a draw control and turnover from Montevallo, caused by Emmanuel's Shannon Sapp, the Lady Lions had three shot attempts from Makayla White and Lara Russell.

A ground ball was picked up by Megan Shortt before Montevallo made a shot attempt and caused a turnover by Hanna Hernandez. Montevallo made a goal and brought their lead to 2-0 with 24:10 remaining.

After a series of shot attempts, draw controls, free position attempts and turnovers, Montevallo made four more goals and led 6-0 with 16:51 remaining in the first half.

The first goal for the Lady Lions was made by Shortt with 15:08 remaining, bringing the score to 6-1. The rest of the first half included two more goals by Montevallo and six more from Emmanuel.

Lady Lions that made the seven total goals for the half included Shortt, Larson, Aleah Marijanich, Makayla White, and Angellie Garica. Larson also had an assist from Marijanich for one of the three goals she made.

Less than a minute into the second half of the game, Montevallo made a goal, increasing their lead 9-7. The Lady Lions were shutout for the next almost eight minutes until Larson made a goal with 21:44 remaining.

After a draw control from Shortt and a good clear attempt from Emmanuel, the next goal was made by Russell with 20:50 remaining. Russell's goal brought the score to 13-9.

The rest of the second half saw five more goals from the Lady Lions, with one from Shortt and  two each from Russell and Larson. Montevallo also made five more goals, bringing them out on top with a final score of 18-14.

Larson ended the game with six of the team's 15 total points. Other points included three for Russell, two for Shortt and Marijanich and one for White and Garcia.

The Lady Lions ended the game with eight ground balls, 11 turnovers, 38 attempted shots and 16 draw controls. Goalie Tiana Machado also had nine saves for the game.

The Lady Lions will travel to Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, V.A for their next game on Feb. 17.
