SIAULIAI, LITHUANIA---Emmanuel College's Liene Vaciete recently played for the Latvian national soccer team at the 2014 Women's Baltic Cup being held in Lithuania from June 6-8, 2014.
The Baltic Cup is played every summer and is where northeastern European rivals Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and sometimes Finland play for the regional bragging rights around the Baltic Sea.
"This is a huge honor for LV to be named to this team and we are very proud of her," said Emmanuel Head Coach Forrest Wimberly. "LV had a very serious ankle injury last fall and all her hard work, determination, and positive attitude throughout her recovery created this opportunity with the national team."
Vaciete is the first EC women's soccer player to represent her country in a senior international soccer match. Last summer, Vaciete represented Latvia at the Women's Rugby 7's European Championship in Slovakia where she helped the team to a fifth-place finish in Division B.
Game one of the Cup versus the hosts Lithuania saw Vaciete enter the match as a second-half substitute. In her 35 minutes of action Vaciete put the ball in the net off a corner kick only to have the goal disallowed by the referee on an offsides call. Lithuania scored the lone goal of the game on a first-half penalty kick to slip past Latvia for the 1-0 win.
Game two of the Cup was 0-4 defeat to regional powerhouse Estonia. Vaciete did not make an appearance versus Estonia.
"Moments like these playing for a national team are very special," finished Wimberly. "We'll be looking for LV to bring back some of that international-match energy to our EC team this August."
The Lions open the 2014 fall season at USC-Aiken on Saturday, September 6 at 6 p.m.
