FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.---The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer program has announced their slate of games for the upcoming 2014 season.
The 2014 season will be a historic season for the Lions as they navigate their first NCAA D II season inside of NCAA D II Conference Carolinas. Emmanuel had been a twelve-year member of the NAIA Southern States Athletic Conference since the birth of the EC program in 2004.
"These are very exciting times in our program and for all of EC Athletics," said Emmanuel Head Coach Forrest Wimberly. "We have played well versus NCAA opponents in the past and always have brought a strong effort to the field when playing an NCAA program. We know every game will be a challenge and will require us to be at our best every time we step on the pitch."
The Lions will play 11 games versus Conference Carolinas opponents and then 7 non-conference games during the seasons. Well-established programs from the Peach Belt Conference (PBC), South Atlantic Conference (SAC), and Gulf South Conference will really test the Lions early in the campaign.
A pair of scrimmages will give the Lions their first action of the season in late August as trips to North Georgia and West Georgia will open the 2014 dates.
The Lions first official NCAA game will be at Peach Belt opponents USC-Aiken on Saturday, September 6 at 6 p.m. Coach Wimberly served as the women's goalkeeper coach at USCA in 2003 and this will be a familiar homecoming for Wimberly. EC has never played USC-Aiken.
The Lions will then play their first Conference Carolinas game at home on Saturday, September 13 at 5 p.m. as King University visits the Springs. EC defeated the Tornado 3-1 last fall in Bristol, Tenn.
Other games versus PBC members Young Harris College and UNC-Pembroke along with games at SAC members Brevard College and Mars Hill College will wrap up a busy September. EC has never played any of these opponents.
Homecoming is Saturday, October 4 as Conference Carolinas foes Converse College visit the Springs for a 5 p.m. kickoff. EC defeated Converse in their only previous meeting 4-2 in 2011.
Lil' Bronze Peach series foes Southern Wesleyan University are also making the NAIA to NCAA transition and they visit the Springs on Saturday, October 18 at 5 p.m. EC defeated the Warriors 2-0 in 2013.
The regular season concludes on Saturday, November 8 as the Lions host Palm Beach Atlantic University at 6 p.m. for senior night 2014. EC lost to PBA 3-1 in the NCCAA South Region tournament to conclude the 2012 season.
To close the season, Emmanuel has been selected as the host for the NCCAA South Region tournament and will host the event November 19-22. EC will play four NCCAA South Region members during the regular season in Southern Wesleyan, Palm Beach Atlantic, Shorter, and North Greenville. Other NCCAA South Region members include Point, Warner, Chowan, and Judson. Schedules and brackets will be available in early November.
"It's going to be a great season," finished Wimberly. "There as so many things to look forward to this fall in EC women's soccer."
