MARS HILL, N.C.---The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer Team collected their first win of the season after an impressive performance against the Mars Hill Lions on Tuesday evening."Tonight was another night of NCAA firsts for our program, said head coach Forrest Wimberly. "We planned and executed a near flawless game plan to get the result tonight. This is a performance we can continue to build on as we navigate out first NCAA season of play."
The Lions played a disciplined formation in the first half, forcing their opponents to play in unfamiliar territory. High pressure by the Emmanuel Lions resulted in an own goal by Mars Hill in the 31st minute, giving Emmanuel an edge heading into the main break. Mars Hill showed some flair up front outshooting Emmanuel 6-3 in the first half.
The Emmanuel College Lions came out in a more attacking formation in the second half, taking control of the game creating some good offensive opportunities. An impressive run up the wing by Kelly Hall resulted in a game winning goal by sophomore Noel Samples when Hall was able to reach the touchline and neatly cut the ball back to the feet of the oncoming Samples. The Mars Hill Lions responded strongly scoring just three minutes later after a poorly cleared breakaway pass, but Emmanuel was able to hold on for the remaining minutes to gain their first NCAA Division ІІ win. Freshman Marina Eisenhut played all 90 minutes in goal for Emmanuel, collecting 3 important saves as well as creating some good attacking flow from her distributions out of the back.
The Emmanuel Lions hit the road this weekend for a string of games, their record now improved to 1-2. Emmanuel takes on Mt. Olive at 1pm on Saturday September 20th, before heading over to UNC Pembroke on Sunday September 21st, the game kicking off at 4pm.
