Franklin Springs, Ga---The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer team lost by a narrow margin to Conference Carolina's foe Barton College on Saturday evening. The only goal for the evening came just seconds before the half time break, and proved to be the difference between an otherwise very even battle.
Emmanuel goalkeeper Marina Eisenhut saw some action early gaining two saves inside the first 5 minutes as the Bulldogs pilled on the pressure in their attack. Substitute Jesse Denney made a positive impact for the Lions as she came in midway through the first half and forced two saves out of Barton goalkeeper Carson Moore. Unfortunately the Lions could not compete with the Bulldogs strong attack being outshot 10-3 in the first half. The goal for the Bulldogs came just 23 seconds before half time when Lane Brooks broke through the right flank and crossed the ball to Grace Fehan whose quick upper right corner strike beat the Emmanuel defense, and was placed out of reach for the EC keeper.
The second half of play for the Lions was much more effective for the Lions as they worked their way back into the match. Emmanuel created some good opportunities that they were unable to capitalize on, as each team recorded 7 shots on goal for the second half of play. Senior Forward Liene Vaciete had a chance to open the scoring for the Lions in the opening minute of the second half after beating the bulldog defense, the strike going high. The Lions had a number of chances throughout the half including two more strikes from Freshman forward Jesse Denney, as well as shots from Watson, Hall and Vaciete but well unable to beat bulldog keeper Carson Moore. Emmanuel forced 4 saves out of Carson in the second half while Emmanuel goalkeeper Breanna Grizzle was only forced to make 2 saves in her 45 minutes of play. Emmanuel almost had a chance to equalize in the dying seconds of the match as the ball was passed through to Liene Vaciete but the pass had a little too much weight and the bulldog keeper was able to clear the ball, clinching victory for the Barton Bulldogs.
Emmanuel heads out on the road this Thursday October 16th as they take on Young Harris College at 7pm, then return home Saturday October 18th to face rivals Southern Wesleyan University in a 5pm kickoff. The Lions are now 1-5 in conference play and 3-8 overall.
