Misenheimer, NC - The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer team sustained a 3-0 loss against Conference Carolina's Pfeiffer University. The Lions had a solid start to the match, maintaining possession of the ball confidently and controlling the flow of play through the midfield. A number of early corners and shots from Emmanuel were dangerous, as the Lions looked to capitalize. After a slower start the Falcons began to gain momentum and put the Lions on the back foot. A scuffle in the penalty box turned into a goal when EC failed to clear the ball properly, the Falcons converting in the 35th minute.
The Lions continued to battle to the half, with just a 1-0 deficit at the main break. The second half was a very even battle, the Falcons able to press slightly harder in the attack outshooting the lions 7-4 in the second half. A few defensive errors proved the difference when Pfeiffer was able to capitalize off too similar low driven shots, breaking through a block of players in the 71st and 85th minutes.
Sophomore Defender Jesse Denney had this to say about the game: "The energy and the work rate that everyone bought to the field was higher than our opposition and the one of the best performances we have seen out of everybody all season. The teamwork and performance felt like a win to us and we plan to carry that into our next game, where we anticipate a better result." The Lions look forward to taking the field again on Saturday when they travel to Barton in North Carolina. Head Coach Forrest Wimberly reflected on the match saying "we played very well tonight, and were just undone by a couple of breakdowns in the defensive third of the field. We will build off this game and look to bounce back with a win on the weekend."
