Womens Wrestling Competes at USA Wrestling's Under 23 World Team Trials

ROCHESTER, MN. - The Women's Wrestling Team started off the year with their first tournament at the USA Wrestling's under 23 World Team Trials. In their first competition of the year, the women did great.

Stong performances came from Cody Pfau and Maria Vidales, who made the finals and had to wrestle eachother for the world team spot. In the end, Pfau came out on top in the first round by tech fall and in the second round by fall. Leading up to the finals, Vidales defeated 2 of her opponents by tech fall and 1 by decision. Cody Pfau won all three of hers by fall. Cody will now represent Team USA from November 21-26th in Bydgoszcz, Poland at the U23 World Championships.

Alexis Encinas came back from a first round loss to the eventual champion in the 53kg weight class to win 4 matches in a row and take 3rd place.

In the 60kg weight class, Abigail Nette beat the 2016 WCWA Champion and 2017 WCWA All-American.

"The girls wrestled good this weekend," said Coach Link Davis. "We had some good performances for being the first tournament of the season and a world team trials... So things are looking good for the Lions!"

Coach Kristie Davis added, "Our team wrestled well this weekend being the first tournament. Made some mistakes that cost us matches but they are correctable. Glad we came out and competed in all our matches still working on getting in wrestling shape but we wrestled hard."

The Lions next event will be at home as they host the Lion Duals on Friday Oct.13th at 12:00pm and the Emmanuel Open on Saturday Oct.14th at 9:00am.
